Creating atmospheres…, Aikaterini Kontodima
Inhalt
The following work is a project that uses light and shadow to create different atmospheres and provoke emotion. Light has no shape. In fact, light has the greatest variety in forms and every form has its own characteristics and qualities. On the other hand, the shadow is, »a hole in the light, something absent.« The light seems to be absent, but the shadow proves the existence of light by canceling it. A shadow can be completely flexible. Depending on the incidence of light, shadows can move, change their intensity or even produce different color qualities in the eyes of the observer. (Keranis M.2010). During this project, a workshop was created, 5 different people took part in it and together we tried to alternate the space using as tools light and the shadows. The participants after a small introduction were able to share their ideas and with a little guidance, we were able to create new atmospheres and they were able to experience the transformation up close. We tried to use already existing elements of the spaces to help us in our transformation. Sources: Keranis Michael Karolos, The role of light in architectural creation. Workshop: Creating atmospheres…
Theme: The theme of the workshop is to create atmospheres using light and shadows. The atmosphere that this workshop wants to create is reflected in the word «δέος», which means admiration accompanied by feelings of fear or anxiety about something that transcends our physical and/or spiritual understanding. It talks about the admiration of something we cannot quite point our finger on it, but we can feel it.
The workshop was implemented in two parts. The first one was introducing the participants to the idea of the project and the second one actual workshop day.
Space: A fire escape staircase and a corridor in my dorm. The space is used every day without much attention but with closer inspection it has elements that can be used for the purpose of the workshop.
Participants: 5 people
Day 1:19/06/2021 Introduction Day
On this day with the help of a presentation and different examples the main idea of the workshop was explained to the participants. Explanation of the main atmosphere we wanted to create was analyzed. The meaning of the word, that serves as our theme was explained, and a few examples were given to the participants to further understand the term. After that, a small conversation with the participants followed to discuss first ideas and techniques.
Day 2: 21/06/2021 Workshop Day
On this day everyone gathered to the designated space. The workshop started with a discussion of different ideas of the participants on how we can use the elements of the space, light and shadow. It was also discussed how these ideas fit into the theme of the workshop and the atmosphere we are planning on creating.
After that, the participants were assigned different roles. Someone is posing since we decided to use the human form as an object. Someone else is holding the flashlight and becomes the source of light and shadow and someone else with guidance and in collaboration with me is taking the picture. Every scenario was created by the contribution of the participants of using different elements of space and my guidance on how we can use them and combine them with the light source.
After we finished taking the photographs, we discussed the results and how the photos and atmospheres turned out. Also, I got feedback from the participants regarding their experience creating those atmospheres and the emotions provoked by the pictures.
